Recycled content tells you about the material. It doesn't tell you about smelting energy, transportation distance, or water usage. Those vary massively between suppliers.

I ask four questions on every audit:

  • Where is the primary aluminum sourced?
  • What energy mix powers the smelting and rolling?
  • How much water is used per ton of can stock?
  • How far does the finished can travel to the filling plant?

Supplier sustainability reports vary wildly. Some give you full lifecycle data. Others hand you a leaflet with a recycling symbol and a vague pledge. Some liners don't burn off cleanly in the de-coating process, which makes aluminum recycling more energy-intensive. The can is still recyclable, but the environmental benefit shrinks. BPA-free liners are standard now, but not all BPA-free formulations are equal in how they interact with recycling streams.

Ask your supplier three things:

  • What exact liner material is used?
  • Is it compatible with standard de-coating processes?
  • What's the coating coverage spec, and what's the tolerance?
