Of all the purchases I manage, LPG is the one that makes me look stupid when I get it wrong. I'm an office administrator for a 180-person manufacturing site, and I report to both operations and finance. I handle things like canteen gas, forklift fuel, and backup heating—about 80 to 100 LPG cylinder swaps a year. It's not the biggest line item, but it's the one that stops the floor when it fails.
I've bought LPG as 10 kg LPG cylinders, as 47kg LPG bottles, and eventually moved part of our supply to an LPG bulk storage tank. I've also tested plastic LPG cylinders for a few departments. This piece is my honest comparison, written for another administrator or a small operations manager who needs to make a call and doesn't need a sales brochure.
How I'm comparing them
Three configurations. One job. The real differences show up in four places: cash flow, delivery certainty, space, and compliance. I'll give a direct conclusion at each step. I'm not going to end every section with 'it depends'—on some points, one option is simply better.

Cost: 10 kg vs 47 kg vs bulk tank
Per kilogram, the 10 kg LPG cylinder is the most expensive way to buy gas. That's almost universal. In our region, the refill price per kg for a 10 kg cylinder was about 15% higher than for a 47kg LPG bottle. The 47kg bottle came in lower per kg, and the bulk tank was lower still—roughly another 25% below the 47kg level. I don't have hard data on national averages, but the direction has been the same every time I've quoted it.
Still, the unit price isn't the whole story. There are three other costs:
Deposits. A 10 kg cylinder requires a smaller deposit. A 47kg LPG bottle deposit is heavier, and a bulk tank is a real capital project—tank, foundation, piping, vaporizer. For us, the tank investment paid back in about 3.4 years. If you're renting or unsure about your site, forget it.
Handling. This is where most people miss the point. A 10 kg steel cylinder is manageable, but at our volume I had to store twenty of them. That's warehouse space, and it's not free. A bulk tank killed the cylinder clutter and freed roughly 14 square meters.
Ordering time. Ten 10 kg cylinders means ten times the phone calls, ten times the invoice checks, and ten times the risk of running out. A 47kg bottle cuts some of that. A tank cuts almost all of it.
My conclusion: for high continuous consumption, the bulk tank wins on total cost—if you have the capital and the space.
One surprise: the plastic LPG cylinder. A composite 10 kg cylinder costs about two to two and a half times what you'd pay for steel, if you're buying the cylinder outright. But it weighs roughly half as much. For people moving cylinders all day, that weight difference saves time and injuries. In a site with high turnover, plastic can be the cheaper option despite the higher sticker price. That still feels counterintuitive to me.
Delivery certainty: the part I care about most
When I took over purchasing in 2020, I chose suppliers based on price. I stopped after one expensive lesson.
In March 2024, a supplier promised to deliver two 47kg LPG bottles by Thursday. They didn't show up. The canteen had to close for a day, and the operations manager was furious. I paid $400 for rush delivery from another supplier to get us through the weekend. The alternative was stopping half the warehouse. The original supplier later offered a $90 credit. I still switched.
So how do the three options compare on certainty?
10 kg LPG cylinders: easy for suppliers to deliver quickly because they're light and common. But smaller cylinders mean you run out more often, and each delivery has another chance to slip.
47kg LPG bottles: better per-kg price, fewer deliveries, but heavier. If a supplier's truck breaks down, you have no gas and a very heavy problem. Don't let a supplier put you on a 'whenever we're in the area' route. That's how the canteen closes.
LPG bulk storage tank: the highest certainty, with one condition. The supplier can monitor your tank and schedule automatically. But the certainty comes from the contract, not the tank. I negotiated a written delivery window and a penalty for missed deliveries. The salesperson looked at me like I was strange, but it protected us.
Look, I'm not saying you should always pay for the premium supplier. I'm saying the premium buys a guarantee, and guarantees are worth real money when missing a delivery costs more than the gas itself.
Honestly, I've never fully understood why some suppliers hit their timelines while others miss. My best guess is it comes down to how much buffer stock they carry internally. Ask about buffer stock before you ask about price.
Space and handling: steel cylinders are heavy, period
A full 47kg LPG bottle weighs roughly 70 kg. You can move it on a trolley, but you can't just pick it up. If you have one person doing deliveries, the 47kg bottle is a bad idea from an injury perspective.
The 10 kg LPG cylinder is lighter—around 15 kg empty, 25 kg full—but it doesn't solve the storage problem. You end up with a cage full of cylinders. They need ventilation, signage, and distance from doors. That's a lot of footprint for gas you're going to burn in a week.
Bulk tanks, by contrast, sit outside. Ours is about two meters across, and the delivery truck can reach it without blocking the yard. It freed up the old cage area for storage shelves. That was a surprise benefit: more usable indoor space without building anything.
The plastic LPG cylinder is the handling winner. A composite 10 kg cylinder is noticeably lighter, and it doesn't rust or corrode. I'd argue it's the right choice for any site where the same person handles cylinders repeatedly. The extra upfront cost is real, but so are the backs you save.
Compliance: test stamps and paperwork matter
I'm not a compliance officer, but I've learned to ask for two things before ordering:
- The cylinder test date—loudly and in writing.
- The supplier's registration and delivery documentation.
I once saved $90 by choosing a cheaper 10 kg LPG cylinder supplier. Their cylinders had expired test stamps. A fire inspector noticed, and we spent $240 to deal with the paperwork and re-testing. That was my 'save the coins, spend the notes' moment. Now I check every cylinder before accepting a delivery.
As of January 2025, the rules in our jurisdiction require any steel LPG cylinder to have a valid test stamp. In India, PESO enforces periodic testing under the Gas Cylinders Rules, 2016. Composite cylinders are covered under a different approval path—again, check with your local authority. A reliable supplier will send photos of test stamps without arguing. The one who argues is telling you something.
For a bulk storage tank, compliance is bigger: site approval, static earthing, fire extinguisher access, and sometimes a licensed inspector. That's why I wouldn't buy a tank without the legal and safety team involved. It's not a reason to avoid it, but it's a reason to plan ahead.
Factory-direct vs. local LPG bottle suppliers
If you search 'LPG cylinder factory,' you'll find a lot of big manufacturers. They'll sell you cylinders at impressive prices—if you buy a full truckload. For a single site, that's not practical. I toured a factory in 2023, and their quality documents were excellent. But they didn't want to deliver two 47kg LPG bottles on a Tuesday. Local suppliers did.
In my opinion, the factory-direct model only makes sense if you have multiple locations or a very high usage rate. Then you can buy a truckload, distribute it, and manage your own buffer. For 80 to 100 swaps a year, use a local supplier with a track record and an actual delivery schedule.
Three things to ask any LPG bottle supplier:
- What's the exact delivery window?
- How many cylinders do you keep in buffer?
- What happens if you miss the window?
If they can't answer all three in concrete terms, they're an order from the 'cheap but uncertain' column.
What I'd choose again
If I had to do it over, I'd install a bulk storage tank first, then keep two 47kg LPG bottles as backup. The tank gives the lowest per-kg cost and the best delivery certainty—but only with a contract that holds the supplier accountable.
If a tank isn't possible, I'd use 47kg LPG bottles as the primary source. They're heavy, but the per-kg savings and fewer deliveries are worth it. I'd reserve 10 kg LPG cylinders as a quick-swap backup. And if individual gas usage matters, I'd buy plastic LPG cylinders for anyone who moves them frequently.
Is the premium option worth it? Sometimes. Depends on the risk. In my experience, the most expensive failure in LPG isn't the gas, it's the certainty you didn't buy.
So glad we made the bulk tank move when we did—almost skipped it to save capital, but the shortage in 2022 would have shut us down for a week. That was a close call.
